Hair Cut/Color Decisions.

I have fine, dark brown hair I don't do anything with. I used to cycle through shoulder length to almost waist length but I haven't cut it to shoulder length in over 4 years, and basically no matter long I go between trims it never goes past my waist.

Today I think I decided to cut it to shoulder length again, but probably not till spring because I like the extra warmth.

I also realized I want to dye it for basically the first time (I got 1 highlight when I was 20). I want something subtle and stupid low maintenance. I was thinking dark purple tips. Is that crazy?

Colors are not low maintenance. You'll need to retouch the color every 4 weeks to keep it vivid. When I kept mine cobalt I had to retouch every 3rd week or it faded to a weird teal.

Agreed with HBC, I have purple on the underneath half of my hair and I have a standing monthly appointment to get it redone (just went tonight!).

If you want something subtle and low maintenance I would suggest balayage. Here are a few pics I found to give you an idea! Since it's just the ends you won't have to get it redone often (or at all if you just want it to grow out).

Oh also, if you would want the purple to really show up much at all on your dark brown hair you'd have to bleach the tips anyway, at least a bit. When my purple fades out it goes lavender and then silver over the bleached parts (which I love) but just keep in mind that it won't be a perfect purple shade then gone entirely.

Thanks for the input. I think the only natural human color I'm possibly interested in is red.

The thing is, I'm not sure if I care about the color being vivid. I think I like the idea of it being so subtle that I barely notice it. Or it fading to a color I don't hate (so I'm very skeptical about anything greenish)

Red is insanely high maintenance, FYI. (I'm a dyed redhead)

  7. Also dyed redhead and, yeah, it sucks to maintain.

I used to dye my hair dark auburn. It was enough of a change to feel different and flattering, but not enough to have super obvious roots. Maybe find something close to natural ?

I'm way too lazy to color my hair now. My husband likes my natural color, and discourages me from dying it. I use that as my excuse instead of the truth that I'm lazy AF.

One of my friends used to dye her hair (out of a box) a really dark burgundy/plum colour. In most lighting it looked dark brunette but when there was bright light the purple tones really stood out. She also didn't have to bleach her hair first. Would something like that interest you?

I think that might be the right thing AM. Did she have dark hair to begin with, or medium?

And I am open to bleaching some of my hair, just not something difficult to chop off, and no green or greenish blue because I'd probably let it fade and then it would look awful.

I think I'll ask a stylist next time I get a haircut. There's a place near me called Manic Panic which does a lot with fun colors.

Manic Panic is a good brand of hair dye for fun colors! If you want something really long lasting that smells amazing and is gentle on your hair I am always recommending Arctic Fox brand but you have to buy it online and then bring it to your salon (unless the salon carries it in which case you're lucky!)

My stylist is in Mexico and the salon doesn't know when he's coming back. I don't know how that happens, but anyway, now I'm stuck with either using one of the other stylist for a trim and bang cut, or letting my bangs grow. Decisions, decisions.

Same thing happened with our favorite bartender, so I feel your pain.

Jennifer Lawrence's hair last night is making me want short hair again.

I've been growing it out for 5 years, it was a little more than chin length but not quite at the shoulders while I lived in Grenada. Currently is halfway down my boobs. When I can coax the wave out of my hair it only starts past my ears, so I'm worried if I chop of the length I'll loose all the slight curl I have. On the other hand I wonder if cutting off the length and getting rid of some weight will help the wave.

I get more wave with less length/weight, so I'd imagine you would as well.

  16. My hair is about that length but it's making me want to get my hair thinned again. I just colored it dark brown and I'm kind of loving it.

When my hair was that length the waves worked really well. Since I've cut it shorter, not so much.

I absolutely love that cut. If I wanted it, though, I'd have to commit to straightening everyday. If I didn't, I would literally turn into a mushroom. Sads.

I just brush my hair and it straightens out, even when I can get it to wave it's not frizzy. Chopping it off tomorrow! Eek!

So I've made an appointment with a friend of mine to have my hair colored in the "oil slick" style. I feel a little silly dying my hair colors in my 30s, but I'm pretty bored with my look right now.

Some pictures of the oil slick if you've never seen it

I like it, but I think more as a chunky highlight than an all over color.

I wish I had a job that would allow for fun highlights. I've wanted a couple pink streaks forever.

That's pretty similar to how mine is now, but it's just the underneath half. I loooooove it :) I did royal blue, aquamarine, and purple.

So pretty! Show us the results after, @hellohelloagain!

@Erie I love! Subtle, yet so fun.

I'm with @Manhands -- I wish I had a job that allowed for cool colour. My hair feels so boring . As soon as August rolls in, I'm going to go grey/silver. By September when I officially leave my job, I'm taking that silver and doing dark purple roots fading out to a lavender at the tips. Can't wait!

I've been trying to make an appointment for weeks but haven't had time to go. I desperately need a cut and want some color. I usually do highlights in the summer and then dye it back my natural color in the fall. So boring. I don't know if I want to commit to something high maintenance but I want something different.
